Seven and a half hours seated versus a three-hour flight — even with airports at both ends, flying gets you there faster and often for a similar price. Take the train if you dislike flying, want to watch the country change, or find a cheap overnight sleeper.

Should you take the train or fly?
Fly, for most trips. The fastest trains take about 7 hours 30 minutes station to station. A flight is around 3 hours in the air, and even after you add getting to Daxing or the capital airport, security, and the ride into Chengdu, you’re at roughly 5–6 hours door to door — comfortably ahead of the train, and often for a similar fare to second class.
When the train still wins. If flying stresses you out, if you want to watch north China give way to the Sichuan basin, or if you catch a cheap overnight sleeper — about 12 hours, but you travel while you sleep and save a hotel night.
Stations, tickets and what to expect
Which stations. Trains run Beijing West (Beijingxi) to Chengdu East (Chengdudong), both on the metro.
How to book. Trip.com or the 12306 app, passport as the ID type. For the overnight services, book a soft sleeper (软卧) well ahead — there are only a handful of berths.
Seat classes. On a 7.5-hour daytime run, first class is worth considering for the extra room. Business class is a lot of money for a domestic trip.

Flying, clearly. The train is about 7.5 hours station to station; a flight is around 3 hours in the air and 5–6 hours door to door. Only very long airport delays close that gap.
How much is the train?
Second class is about ¥808–883 (≈ $112–123), first class around ¥1,290–1,415, business seat about ¥2,500–2,770. Airfares are often in a similar range to second class, sometimes lower well in advance.
Are there overnight trains?
Yes — a few D-class services run overnight with sleeper berths, taking roughly 12 hours. That can be worth it: you save a hotel night and skip a travel day.
