It's a commuter hop; nothing else competes. But book Shanghai Railway Station to Suzhou Railway Station, not the faster Hongqiao–Suzhou North trains — the main stations put you next to the old town and gardens, while Suzhou North is a taxi ride out.
Should you take the train or fly?
There’s nothing to decide — it’s 84 km, about 25 minutes, and trains run almost continuously from early morning to nearly midnight. Second class costs around ¥40.
The only real choice is which stations. Shanghai Railway Station to Suzhou Railway Station is the one to book: both are central, both are on the metro, and Suzhou’s main station is a short hop from the old town, the gardens and Pingjiang Road. The faster Hongqiao to Suzhou North trains save a few minutes but leave you well north of everything you came to see, needing a taxi or a long metro ride in.
